Methi daal


  1. Toor daal  –  three-fourth cup
  2. Chopped onions  –  one-fourth cup
  3. Chopped tomatoes  –  one-fourth cup
  4. Methi seeds  –  half tsp
  5. Coriander seeds  –  half tsp
  6. Red chillis  –  four to five
  7. Salt  –  to taste
  8. Tamarind  –  two inches (Soak in water and squeeze)
  9. Turmeric powder  –  one-fourth tsp
  10. Water –  two and half cups
  11. Oil  –  one tblsp
  12. Jeera seeds  –  half tsp
  13. Mustard seeds  –  half tsp
  14. Urad daal  –  half tsp
  15. Coriander leaves  –  few
  16. Sliced garlic  –  one tsp


In a pan add methi seeds, coriander seeds and red chillis. Roast them. Make a fine powder. In a vessel add toor daal, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, water (two cups) and powder.

Pressure cook up to three whistles. Cool and remove it. Add salt, water (half cup), tamarind pulp and turmeric powder. Boil it. In another pan prepare tadka with oil, urad daal, mustard seeds, jeera seeds and garlic. Add tadka and coriander leaves to daal. Mix well.
