Bisi bele bhath


  1. Rice  –  one cup
  2. Toor daal  –  half cup
  3. Chopped Potatoes  –  one-fourth cup
  4. Chopped capsicum  –  one-fourth cup
  5. Chopped onions  –  half cup
  6. Chopped carrots  –  one-fourth cup
  7. Green peas  –  one-fourth cup
  8. Chopped cabbage  –  one-fourth cup
  9. Chopped tomatoes  –  one-fourth cup
  10. Chopped beans   –  one-fourth cup
  11. Bisi bele bhath powder  –  two to three tblsp
  12. Salt  –  to taste
  13. Turmeric powder  –  one-fourth tsp
  14. Tamarind  –  lime size (soak in water and squeeze the juice out)
  15. Oil  –  four tblsp
  16. Urad daal  –  three-fourth tblsp
  17. Chana daal  –  three-fourth tblsp
  18. Jeera seeds  –  one tblsp
  19. Mustard seeds  –  three-fourth tblsp
  20. Asafoetida  –  pinch
  21. Curry leaves  –  few
  22. Coriander leaves  –  few
  23. Groundnuts  –  two tblsp
  24. Water  –  eight cups


Pressure cook rice, toor daal, cabbage, onions, carrots, beans, capsicum, potato, peas and water (six cups) until three whistles. Turn off the heat, let it cool down. Transfer these to a pan and add turmeric powder, tamarind juice, bisi bele bhath powder, salt, tomatoes and remaining water. Mix well and bring them to boil.

Prepare tadka with chana daal, urad daal, oil, jeera seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and groundnuts. Add tadka to the boiled mixture. Garnish with coriander leaves, serve with raitha.
